Welcome to the latest edition of the Peruap bulletin. Since the December 2010 bulletin, the Project has continued to receive donations for which the Project says a big thank you, and the group Amistad who help the Project in Lima/Callao have been busy responding to requests for help, using donations sent from London. They have sent us some photos together with information about their work, which we will detail below.

Donation from Fred Still Christmas Party/Kristin’s Leaving Party

Many thanks to Kristin Kerwin and her then fiancé, now husband, Mike Bila, who donated money left over from our Neonatal Unit Christmas party which doubled as her leaving do as she was returning to the USA, to the Project. This very kind donation of £212 was put into the Project bank account whilst we waited for Amistad to let us know of a group who needed help. They were considering requests and trying to juggle their various working and social lives with doing work for the Project. It wasn’t always easy for them to get together, but their leader Paty Zavala managed to arrange group meetings and their enthusiasm to help their fellow countrymen in need has been really important to us, living so far away and only able to visit yearly, and they get a lot of satisfaction from their efforts. Peruap in the UK are very grateful to them.

“Centro del Adulto Mayor”. Tarapacá, Callao

The £220 donated by Kristin and Mike was sent to Peru as US dollars, and was used by the group to help a group of elderly people in the “Centro del Adulto Mayor, Tarapacá, Callao”. Tarapacá is a poor area located in the province of Callao. Many people in Peru do not receive an old age pension as there is no government scheme, and poor elderly people struggle to survive. It was decided to give a donation to the women of this group on Mother’s Day, which in Peru is in May. After talking to the President of the Centre, Señora Blanca Leyva Cardenas and her committee, it was decided that a fleece gilet for the coming winter months would be an acceptable donation for each of the women, and Amistad bought 24 of these. Two of the women were unable to walk and were virtually prisoners in their homes, having been unable to get help from other organisations, and Señora Leyva Cardenas obtained medical reports on the two ladies affected with a request for help for them. After speaking to us Amistad members went out and found two wheelchairs and these were presented to the two ladies, Olga Cruz Balarezo and Dolores Cespedes Robles, together with a gilet each for each of the women at a reunion on Mother’s Day 2011. So a big thank you from these ladies to Kristin and Mike.
Amistad returned to Tarapacá in June when on Father’s Day, 18th June 2011, they donated 15 fleeces and 15 scarves to the men of the elderly people’s centre, for which Señora Blanca Cardenas and her committee sent a letter of thanks and gratitude for the help of Amistad and Peruap.

Donation to Shanty-town “El Progreso”, Callao

In March the group Amistad visited the shanty town “El Progreso” in response to a request for help that we had received when we were in the neighbouring shanty town “Nueva Esperanza” last year giving donations of fleece jumpers to the children there. A woman from “El Progreso” came to us as we were leaving “Nueva Esperanza” and said that “El Progreso” was equally as poor and needed aid. She was told to formally request help and was given the address of the Amistad group as we were about to return to the UK.

Amistad found that “El Progreso” was indeed equally as poor as its neighbour and in need of help. As in Nueva Esperanza, the 42 families living in El Progreso make a living recycling plastics, cardboard, tin etc. which involves going round the streets of Callao and Lima with their carts and picking up the rubbish which they bring back to their homes in the shanty town to sort. Their homes are poor wooden shacks. Some of the women of the shanty town applied for help to the government sponsored programme “Vaso de Leche” (“Glass of Milk”) whereby the younger children and elderly people are given a glass of milk each day to boost their nutritional needs. Lidia Meza Asca is the president of this group of village women, and she and her committee met with Amistad and said that they need to replace their worn out stove which cooks the breakfast which they provide each morning using the milk for the 90 children and 40 elderly people who receive the Vaso de Leche support. So Amistad were able to provide a new semi-industrial 2 ring gas stove using Peruap money. Amistad also helped a woman and her 2 children so that they were able to be given a daily breakfast through the Vaso de Leche group. This lady lives in appalling poverty, is unable to work due to illness, has no support and no Identity card which makes her ineligible to be able to apply for her children to receive breakfast from Vaso de Leche. Unfortunately many people in Peru have no Identity card, which each adult over the age of 18 should have, sometimes for reasons of not knowing their birth dates or for reasons of illiteracy, and many of these people come from the Andes or the jungle areas of Peru. Amistad requested that the lady concerned as well as her two children be allowed to be given breakfast each day from the supplied milk, and the committee agreed that they would receive a ration each every day.

Donation of Educational Material to Shantytown “Cueva los Tallos”, Pachacutec, Callao

Amistad received a request from the Institution “Pronei” asking for educational materials. Pronei, a programme of early learning, supports children under 6 years old who live in very poor areas such as in shantytowns, and according to national figures, presently is supporting approximately 300,000 children in the poorest areas in Peru, especially in the Andean region and in the shanty towns in Lima and Callao. Pronei was based on the Wawa Wasi experience, which helped poor infant school aged children in the Andean areas. Amistad were able to use a donation from Peruap to provide crayons and paper and the type of laminated pictures that you often see on walls in infants schools that introduce the alphabet or show animals. From the photos that the group took the children look very happy with the donation. The teachers, Bertha Huaman Trejo, Grisela Eugenio Llanto and Valle Tafua Mejia report that the children come from homes with few economic resources, that many of the parents are unable to find work, and that the teachers want to provide the children with a good quality education. This will be the best way to help the children out of the circle of poverty in which their less educated parents are stuck.
Thanks sent for a donation made last July

Peruap has just received an e mail thanking us for the donation made last July whilst visiting Lima, of a two ring portable stove which was donated to the group who help domestic workers who are being exploited or abused, “SINTTRAHOL” (Sindicato de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras del Hogar de la Región Lima). They use this stove for Union events in the capital spreading their message inviting people who are being exploited or abused to come forward and talk to them, so that steps can be taken to help them. Whilst we were visiting last year, the President of the group in Lima, Leddy Mozombite Linares, gave us the example of a lady who they helped who had worked for various members of the same family from her youth until old age when the family put her on the streets because she was considered too old to work for them any more. This lady had lost contact with her own family many years before when she was young, (many of these people come from poor areas, maybe from the Andean areas many miles away) and now had no contacts and no resources to be able to support herself, and was in effect destitute and too old to find work. Leddy has just been re-elected as President of the Union, and she is determined to continue fighting for domestic workers’ rights

Volunteering appeal

In order to continue with our fundraising events we are looking for volunteers to help us to organise our next fundraising event for Peru Apurimac Project possibly in November this year when our Project will be ten years old. Anyone interested in helping to organise the fundraising event please let us know.

Latest news

We will soon be travelling to Peru and as in previous times we will take the opportunity of visiting some of the places in the poor areas where our Project has supported community groups. We will contact local people there and see the conditions they are living in and how Peruap can continue helping them.

A visit to Chiara by Maria Anne Moore

This is a report and photos taken by Maria Anne Moore of her recent visit to the Andean village of Chiara in Apurimac Peru.

Visit to Chiara October – December 2010

From October to December of 2010 I was fortunate enough to be able to spend time in Chiara carrying out initial field research related to my PhD in Public Health. I would like to sincerely thank Claudio Chipana of Peru Apurimac Project for the invitation to his village and also the chiarinos who without exception made me very welcome in their community from the outset. In particular I would like to mention Marisol Buleje, Coordinator of the Mother’s Club, who not only took it upon herself to ensure the women in the Mother’s Club kept me well fed throughout my visit, but was an excellent friend to me during my stay. In addition, I would like to thank the staff of the Posta de Salud Chiara (health clinic) – Doctora Jeannette; José Luis, the Obstetrician; Yanet and Inés, the nurses - who allowed me to observe them in their duties, answered my many questions with infinite patience and also permitted me to make the Posta my home for 3 months.

During my stay, the people of Chiara told me on many occasions how grateful they were for the work carried out by Peru Apurimac Project, a charity organization set up in London in 2001 by Claudio Chipana and Judith Grimsdell. They asked me to express their gratitude to everyone who works with, or has supported the project in the past. They are extremely grateful for the recent donations received from PERUAP and in particular wish to extend their thanks to Claudio for never forgetting his community back home, despite having lived in London for many years now.

Based upon my experiences in Chiara, I have summarised below the main difficulties and problematic areas currently experienced by the chiarinos in the hope that it may act as a guide for the future allocation of donations and funds raised and encourage all of us to continue to support the excellent work done by PERUAP.

• Transport (Infrastructure and Road Safety)
• Environment (Recycling, Rubbish and Reforestation)
• Community (Club de Adulto Mayor, Community Meeting Place, Club de Madres)

Health Care

The top Public Health priority identified by DISA (the Regional Health Authority) in the Apurímac region is Maternal and Child Health. Currently, although the Posta (clinic) in Chiara has a delivery room, the clinic lacks the necessary equipment to adequately care for newborns in difficulties. Accordingly, all births must take place in the Centro de Salud Huancaray (Huancaray Health Centre). This is a two hour drive away. The Posta has no ambulance of its own, which often means that heavily pregnant women and indeed any emergency patient needing to be transferred to Huancaray or Andahuaylas Hospital (a further two hours away) needs to be sent by combi (a mini bus). The village desperately needs an ambulance of its own. The recently elected Mayor, Nicanór, is currrently discussing the possibility of obtaining an ambulance from DISA. However, even if the ambulance is obtained, money will still be needed to pay for a driver and petrol as well as maintenance costs.

Childhood malnutrition is a serious problem affecting 25% of children in Chiara according to statistics compiled by DISA in December 2010. Whilst to some extent this may be due to poor diet, undoubtedly parasitic infection plays a part. The Posta lacks the necessary laboratory resources to carry out an effective deparasitation campaign. Again, the Mayor is investigating the possibility of organising a deparasitation campaign in 2012 with the assistance of NGO’s working in the area. Resources will however be needed to purchase medicines not available through the SIS (Health Insurance).

Transport

Last year, the roads leading to Chiara were widened and improved. However these improvements have not been reciprocated with respect to public transport. Chiara remains without a taxi service to transport people and goods to and from Andahuaylas, the regional capital. Three combi companies operate the only service connecting Chiara to the capital. Unfortunately there have been many accidents recently, in the course of the last 18 months despite improvements to the road. In October 2009 5 people were fatally injured in a combi accident as the bus was descending the mountain pass to Chiara. I was also involved in an accident in November 2010. I urge the owners of the combi companies to assume their responsibilities in respect to road safety and also ask the authorities to ensure that road safety is given top priority. What is the point of improving the road if the combis that travel along it are unsafe or are driven dangerously? Perhaps PERUAP, being a well respected organisation in Chiara can also bring pressure to bear on this point.

Environment

During my stay in Chiara much work was done on reforestation of the hillsides surrounding Chiara, which have suffered the consequences of deforestation over the years due to the constant use of wood burning stoves in the town. Several faenas or minkas (community work) were called by Señor Mercedio, the Community President and other village authories. Even the pupils in Secondary school participated over two days,digging holes for the trees to be replanted.
Unfortunately, it has to be noted that at present the Muncipality, after collecting the rubbish from the village, simply discards it on the mountainside a few kilometres from Chiara. Much of this rubbish is non biodegradable (plastic bottles and bags, tin cans etc.) but could easily be recycled. Facilities do not exist in Chiara to do this, but perhaps with support and encouragement the Municipality could be persuaded to transport the rubbish for recycling to Andahuaylas or the nearest recycling facility. At present, the current situation, apart from being an eyesore on what is otherwise a beautiful landscape, poses a health risk as the rubbish dump is in close proximity to a nearby stream and water supply.

Last year in Andahuaylas several nearby communities implemented the use of “cocinas mejoradas” (improved stoves). This consists in adapting the existing open wood burning stove to incorporate a metal chimney which effectively funnels the wood smoke out of the living quarters and into the open air. This can only have a positive effect on health, in a community where many inhabitants,particularly the elderly suffer from acute respiratory infections. The cost of adapting the stoves is minimal, but highly beneficial. Resources will be needed to purchase materials and pay for labour.

Community

The Club de Adulto Mayor (OAP’s Club) continues to grow in popularity in Chiara. The club is now looking for a venue in which to host its monthly meetings, having now outgrown its old meeting room in the Posta. The Club provides the opportunity for the older generation in Chiara to meet, discuss health issues with Doctora Jeanette, receive health advice from the Doctora and mutual support from each other, chat, relax, watch a DVD and dance lots of Huayno! The Club are committed to finding their own venue but will need assistance in possible renovation costs.

The community also need a communal meeting place. Building work has begun on a communal centre off the main square which has been funded by PERUAP. To date, only the first floor has been built and remains largely a shell. More funding would enable the community to complete the building, which would also provide the Club de Adulto Mayor with the perfect venue for their monthly meetings.

The Club de Madres (Mother’s Club) and Comedor Popular (Communal Kitchen) have also begun further construction work on sealing the roof structure in order to make it water tight. This work has also been funded wholly by PERUAP, but further resources are needed to complete the work.

Latest trip to Peru and Christmas greetings

Dear Friends,

In “Nueva Esperanza” shanty town

In July 2010 we visited “Nueva Esperanza” (New Hope), a shanty town in Callao which is the main port of Peru which is situated next to Lima and has the international “Jorge Chavez” airport which serves Peru.

Nueva Esperanza was founded in 1993 by people who came down to the capital of Peru looking for a better life. It is situated next to the river Rimac, which is dry for part of the year, and on the other side of the shanty town is a tributary of the river which when we were there in July, the dry season when the Rimac is dry, was quite fast flowing. The houses are made of panels of wood hammered together and the poorest people live in pieces of sacking. They make their money by recycling, and go out in the afternoons with their carts to pick up whatever discarded object may bring in some money, returning to the shanty town the following morning with their “treasures” in their carts. Whilst we were visiting we saw several people pushing their carts over the rickety bridge that separates Nueva Esperanza from the next town of Callao, and two women on separate occasions had their babies in the cart on top of the rubbish that they had accumulated during their travels around Lima/Callao. One woman was pushing her cart helped by her elder daughter who didn’t look more than about ten years old. The bridge has no sides and occasionally a cart – or a child – falls into the flowing tributary of the river which flows underneath the bridge.

The head of the village, Señor Bruno, and his fellow villagers, made us very welcome on our first visit, but were rather suspicious. We were told that various groups of people had visited the village in the past, “gringos” (white visitors) and people from the local government, who had promised them help which had never materialised. So they were not really convinced that we meant to help them, which made it very important that we kept in touch with them after our visit, to arrange a date to meet to buy the materials that they needed and get them taken to the shanty town.

We were told that they were in need of a concrete floor for their “locale”, a wooden building with a stamped earth floor which was wet and stony and certainly not conducive to being sat on. They also wanted a toilet and sink in the locale, and told us that if we could provide the materials that they could do the work. So we met Sr. Bruno and from Project funds bought the materials for the floor, cement and sand, and bricks to construct the wall around the toilet. On another trip Project money bought a toilet and cistern and a sink and stand. We had been told about a family who were the poorest in the town: a woman, her two grown-up daughters, one of whom had a neurological condition, and the 3 year old son of the affected daughter – the 3 year old was far from normal, not speaking and appearing to be hyperactive. They were living in part of a dwelling of another inhabitant of the shanty town, using a huge cardboard box as their walls and ceiling and with orange boxes pushed together as beds.

Their neighbours were concerned enough about this family to ask if we could help them, and it was shocking being taken into their home and seeing the awful conditions in which they were living. There was rubbish from ceiling to floor in part of the dwelling, recycling materials which they had yet to sort out. It was difficult to imagine living there, to think that that was someone’s home. Outside a pregnant dog with mange was wandering about looking for food. From each of the dwellings in the shanty town there were pipes taking waste which emptied either into the River Rimac or into the tributary at the back of the shanty town.

The project felt that as the other people of Nueva Esperanza were asking for help for the poor family mentioned above, that it would be appropriate to help them and bought 3 wooden panels and some plastic corrugated roofing to make a little home for them. The wooden panels were duly lashed onto the roof of a taxi, and the driver charged us for the fine that he would have to pay when the police charged him for carrying goods which exceeded the size of the roof of his vehicle, and off he went with one of the group “Amistad” who help us when we are in Peru and who keep an eye on Project work when we are in the UK. Meanwhile we had an interesting journey to the shanty town with a car full of the other goods, bent double under the roll of corrugated roofing which went through the car and out of the front passenger window.

Nueva Esperanza also asked for warm clothing for the children, and the Project was able to provide them with 80 fleece jumpers bought in “Gamarra”, a part of Lima where it is possible to find all types of clothing and where clothing is made for some of the well known names. With our helpers from “Amistad” we gave out the jumpers, one to each child, from a list that Sr. Bruno had drawn up with help from the women of the village.
Although Nueva Esperanza had asked us for help to provide them with a new bridge over to the shanty town, a member of “Amistad” who works with metal, was able to assure us that the bridge was stable and that although it would benefit from having sides on it, the cost would be out of the reach of our Project and that it would be better to approach the Municipality for funds to help with replacing it.

In Chiara, Andahuaylas

The Project also visited the village of Chiara in Apurimac where the Project began in 2001. Before visiting we had been in touch with the village by phone (many villagers now have mobile phones, an irony in a village where many of the inhabitants are still semi literate), and with the help of the nurse, Yanet, from the medical centre there, who is married to the village Governor Percy Ochoa, we were able to buy jumpers for each of the children of 6 years old and under, and toys for the children of 7 and 8 years old. Yanet made a list of all the children for us so that we knew the numbers to buy for. We bought the jumpers in Andahuaylas, although we later learned when we bought the jumpers for Nueva Esperanza that it would have been cheaper to buy in Gamarra in Lima and transport them to the village. Yanet and her helper in the village helped us to ensure that each child received a jumper, and the pregnant women received a shawl, and that each child received a toy. The toy planes proved very popular amongst the boys and the little tea-sets proved popular amongst the girls, which we will remember for next time.

The Project also provided 20 books to help with the education of children in the primary and infants school.
Yanet told us about the projects which are providing food supplements for the children and women of child bearing age in the village, trying to overcome the anaemia and lack of protein suffered there. The staff of the medical centre help with classes teaching child development and preventative medicine to the mothers, and a nutritionist visits regularly. The Midwife told us that she keeps an eye on and teaches the pregnant women of the village, but that the women give birth in Huancaray, about two hours by road from Chiara and where there is a
hospital and medical facilities for an instrumental delivery or Caesarean section if necessary, and resuscitation facilities for both mother and baby. The women go there about two weeks before they are due to deliver and return to the village by minibus after their delivery. We were travelling to Chiara a few years ago when the minibus picked up a young girl and her baby to take them back to the village.

We will inform you about the results of this donation which will include toys and paneton, a Peruvian style Christmas cake, for the children.

Cusco Fundraising event: Report of the event

News from Peru
We recently received some requests for support from some groups. We received a letter from the Association of parents of disabled children "Being a friend" of the neighborhood areas Pedro Ruiz Gallo - Tarapaca in Callao. "Being a Friend" is an association that has been helping disabled children in the area. They request support for the traditional chocolate for these children during Christmas. The president of this institution is Mrs Lupe Bustamante. It is estimated that in Peru there are about 700,000 children with disabilities, of which 15% or 20% are registered in a program to meet their condition.
Peruap also received another request for help from the Health Directorate of the Regional Government of Callao. Dr Romy R Rangel wrote us seeking assistance to purchase laboratory equipment for three health centers of Callao Health Center Santa Fe, Jose Boterín and Tarapaca. Overall we will send the sum of £ 240.00 for both institutions. We also are sending £100 pounds to support a group of children in the shanty town of Pachacutec Callao to help them to celebrate Christmas. This donation we will be made through the Friendship Group of Callao (“Amistad”) who collaborate with us to channel the support we give in Peru.
We also received a letter from the school Maria Reiche N. Vitarte district in Lima where they express their gratitude for the donation of 25 chairs for the improvement of its furniture. This donation was made by Peruap in October 2009. We thank the Amistad Group based in Callao in the person of its president and treasurer Patricia Zavala and Rosario Fernandez and other members for their voluntary cooperation.

Since 2001 Peruap has been supporting projects and groups in Peru, including disabled children’s centers, rural schools, health centers and others in various parts of Peru. Once again we will be very grateful for any donation from you, it will help us continue this task of supporting these areas with scarce resources. Fundraising event of Peruap
We are planning to hold a meeting to report on our activities and show photos of our last visit to Peru, which would be both an activity to raise funds for Peruap. There is the possibility of organizing a dinner with a variety of dishes from Perù and elsewhere. We will keep you informed.

Peruap need a volunteer to organize our upcoming fundraising events for our project. This includes sending emails, or make contacts with local groups and some coordination meeting. Trip to Peru Sept 09

The Village of Chiara, Andahuaylas, Apurimac

We would like to show you some photos of our latest trip to Peru and the donations made by our project. We met various groups in poor areas in Lima and Callao and in the Andes. We have been to a community centre and a women's centre in Chiara. We also collaborated with a hospital in Callao and a health centre in Lima. We went to Puno where Peruap met school children in an aymara area near Lake Titicaca , in a village called Camata. We will soon publish our next bulletin with a more detailed report of this journey. Here are some pictures taken in September 2009 during our trip to Peru.

We visited the Carrion Hospital in Callao on Monday 24th and we made a donation of babies clothes and blankets for newborn and premature babies, which were donated by Kings College Hospital Neonatal Unit. Peruvian Independence Day Party – 26th July 2009

Acknowledgements

We are very pleased to inform you that the fundraising event organized by PERUAP on 26th July was successful thanks to the collaboration of out friends and everybody who attended the party.
We managed to raise the sum of £718.16 after all costs were deducted. This amount also includes a donation and the selling of two paintings donated by the Peruvian artist Carlos Diaz, and other generous donations. We are especially grateful to all who volunteered on the day of the event, our thanks to Andrew and friend, Amol, Maria-Anne (Mundo Feliz), Tian, Cristina, Gregorio and Sonia, Johnny, Josefina and Medalit. Our thanks to Jessica and Long for donating the raffle basket.
We plan to visit and make donations in Puno, Andahuaylas, Pachacutec Shanty Town in Lima and other possible places in Peru. We will keep you informed about these donations and our future activities.

Visita realizada por Peruap a la provincial de Andahuyalas en enero del 2009. En el distrito de Chiara una como en vistas anteriores cumplimos con efectuar algunas donaciones a fin de colaborar con este pueblo que vive en condiciones de extrema pobreza. Nuestra ayuda que es de lo reacudado en eventos efectuados en la ciudad de Londres consistio esta vez en una cocina mejorada para el comedor popular a fin de sustituir la cocina a leña. Tambien se dono material de construcción para continuar la construcción del future local de la Comunidad Campesina. Asimismo se obsequió juguetes a los niños y otros materials para el local del comedor popular.

Our project will shortly be visiting various local and educational groups as well as a women’s association in the Andes, who all live in conditions of extreme poverty. The aim is to provide them with help to improve their living conditions, or for local projects. We will update you on our return in our next bulletin.

We would like to thank to everybody who attended our latest event on the 1st November to celebrate The Cancion Criolla day, a traditional Peruvian coastal music and rhythms. Our special thanks to the artists who performed on that occasion, the trio Ayer y Hoy (Lalo Rivera,Walter Conde, Felix Apolaya) , the Afro Peruvian dancing group Ritmo y Sabor (Stefanie,Tatiana, Marilyn, Evelyn ). And also our thanks to Eddie and Rosa for allowing us to use their venue, the Inca Arch, and to DJ Gustavo, Talise, Jessica , Johnny , Fidel (photos), for their collaboration .
It was an enjoyable evening where criolla music mixed with music from the Andes thanks to the participation of Peruvian artists Sofía Buchuck and Farylin Erasu. Our thanks to Allan for his wonderful comments about the party , you can visit Allan’s blog at http://malarkeyenperu.blogspot.com/
The money raised will allow us to give support to a school situated in San Andres in the Pisco area which suffered the effects of the earthquake last year and are still waiting for more help. They have requested help for basic educational materials. We are planning to send a donation before the end of this year.
Any donation will be very welcome as we would like to continue helping the mothers club in the Andean community of Chiara in Andahuaylas and also to help other community groups . You can contact our treasurer Liz.
We would like to mention the collection and donation of baby clothes made by Linda who works at Kings College Hospital. The donation has been sent to Grupo Amistad in Callao so they can be distributed among poor mothers of the shanty towns in Lima. We are also looking forward to auction four paintings kindly donated by the Peruvian painter Carlos Díaz. We hope to do so in one of our forthcoming events.

We will always be grateful to those who would like to volunteer to help organising our fundraising events and with the paperwork. Our thanks to Mandy Wickham for helping the Project.

17th and 27th September 2008

We would like to thank everybody who helped us to organise the last two concerts.
Peruap was very proud to present musicians of the highest quality. We are very grateful to Chano Diaz, Andres Prado and Paco Palomino who gave a fantastic concert on 17th September. As on previous occasions we were delighted to hear their music, a superb blend of Peruvian coastal and Andean rhythms.
In the second concert, on 27th September, Andres Prado along with well known figures from the world of jazz in the UK, Steve Waterman, Mario Castronari and David Barry gave an outstanding performance. We were very pleased to have the opportunity to present musicians of such talent and international renown.
Our thanks to everybody who collaborated in the organisation of these two concerts – Nino, Paloma, Gustavo Pezzia, Rosa Bond, Gloria, Carlos, Gregorio, Sonia, Petronila, Carlos Diaz, Express News, Chilli and Ginger, Johnny Rodriguez and the Latin Palace.

Community projects in Peru

We are planning to continue supporting the Women’s Centre in Chiara village in Andahuaylas, Apurimac. We have also received a request to help a school in San Andres, Pisco with educational material. This is an area that was badly damaged by the earthquake in 2007. With the help of Amistad group in Callao we are also intending to continue supporting Pachacutec shanty town in Callao. Another infants school has asked for help with the construction of a new fence for the school.

Our next fundraising event

Peruap would like to invite you to our next and final fund raising event of 2008 which will take place on Saturday 1st November in celebration of El Dia de la Cancion Criolla (Day of Coastal Creole Music). There will be a live show featuring the trio Ayer y Hoy and more artistes. There will also be traditional food and drink. More information will be available shortly. News release September edition

We wish to inform you about our latest events and our last visit to Peru in January 2008. We take this opportunity once again to thank our friends who continue supporting us.
We had planned to visit the area affected by the strongest earthquake in decades which struck the southern coastal area of Peru on 16th August 2007, causing much destruction to Chincha, Pisco, Ica and other areas, affecting around 90,000 families. We were fortunate enough to be accompanied by a friend, Jorge Quispe, a lecturer in San Marcos University who grew up in the area and knows it well, guiding us round an area unknown to us and making our visit much easier. We were horrified to see the destruction with piles of rubble still at the sides of the roads, and in the city of Pisco which had taken the main force of the quake, how even many of the well built brick buildings had been badly damaged or destroyed. We saw the remains of the church which fell down during a service causing many deaths. We decided to visit El Carmen and San Andres with donations raised from a concert given by Rosa Límaco and her son Chano Díaz Límaco and from a collection made during a party organised by Latinos of Richmond plus other money raised.

Our next Fundraising events
We are pleased to announce a concert of Peruvian music featuring the talented musicians Chano Diaz Limaco (charango and quena), Andres Prado ( guitar) and Victor Paco Palomino (guitar) on 17th September 2008 at 7pm at the Latin Palace . The concert will feature Andean and Afro-Peruvian music.
We are also organizing another fund raising concert for our project, again at the Latin Palace , featuring Andres Prado’s British-Peruvian jazz quartet with top British jazz players Steve Waterman (trumpet), Mario Castronari (bass) and David Barry (drums). This event will take place on Saturday 27th September 2008 at 7.30pm. This concert will be followed by a salsa party until late. During both events mentioned, typical Peruvian food will be available.

First visit to El Carmen in Chincha
After paying a short visit to Chincha Alta we went to the village of El Carmen which had been badly damaged by the earthquake. We met with Sra. Esperanza, who lives in the village and to whom we had sent a previous donation of toys for the children of the village for Christmas. She made us very welcome and showed us round El Carmen. It was very sad to see the destruction and to see people still living in tents and temporary huts in which they were baking in the heat of the day. They were also having to put up with rain, a rarity in the area and which reduced the sandy terrain on which the huts and tents were pitched into a mud bath, making living conditions even more unpleasant. The cathedral had been badly damaged and was the one thing that appeared to be being reconstructed.
El Carmen is well known for its Afro-Peruvian culture and music and Esperanza and some of the villagers gave us an impromptu concert of music from the cajón together with dancing and a bit of singing.
During our visit we decided with Esperanza that the way to help the most people was to provide them with foodstuffs, and went to the market where we bought 50 bags containing milk, rice, sugar and cooking oil. On our return to the village we distributed a bag each to the women of El Carmen. The people were complaining of the lack of aid and it seemed unacceptable to see people still living in these conditions 5 months after the earthquake with little hope of an improvement in their situation. They showed a certain amount of resignation, disappointment and sometimes anger towards the authorities, but we were overwhelmed by their warmth and humour.

Visit to San Andres and Pisco
We visited San Andres, also badly damaged by the earthquake and as it is right on the coast was also damaged by a tidal wave which came right up into some of the houses, necessitating the people to evacuate to higher ground. Jorge Quispe introduced us to his family who live in San Andres and who told us of their escape to higher ground – not easy for the many elderly people having to move quickly on foot – and of the resulting damage to the interior of their house and the huge job they had to clear up the disgusting mess left when the sea receded. They stressed that compared to some people they had got off lightly, their house having survived the quake, and that they had seen and been upset by the extent of the destruction of buildings in Pisco and of the effect on the people living in the shanty towns on the edge of San Andrés, which they had visited. When we told them of our donation of foodstuffs to the families in El Carmen they suggested that we do the same thing with the donation that we had for San Andres, so we bought another 50 bags of rice, sugar, cooking oil and milk and took it up to the shanty town. The people there were living in tents in very basic conditions with no sanitation and were initially suspicious when we arrived but when they realised we genuinely wanted to help and wanted nothing in return the families happily received their groceries and spoke to us of their appalling living conditions and the complete lack of official help.
We also visited the local priest in San Andres and the local primary school. Both the priest and the head teacher told us of their concerns about the damage suffered by the church and the school buildings and of their hopes for help to rebuild from the authorities or international bodies.

Visit to Pachacutec shanty town, Callao
We have previously visited and given donations to schools in Pachacutec, a huge shanty town situated in the arid sandy coastal area located in the district of Ventanilla. Last June we visited the parish church and talked to the choir about their need for more musical instruments and promised that we would give a donation to enable them to buy some. We were able to buy a guitar, four pan pipes and four quena pipes which they demonstrated for us in a little concert of music and singing in the presence of the priest and teacher. We remembered the talent of a young boy who played the guitar for us last year and it was lovely to listen to his playing again, this time on the new guitar.
Together with the group Amistad we also visited an infants school near the church and met the teacher and several neighbours whose children attend the school. Previous to our visit we had been asked to help construct a fence around the school. We were shown a new building donated by Peruvians living abroad, and the old building which was in very poor condition and unsafe – it was explained that the door to this building has to be opened by a child crawling through a hole in the bottom of the door and then opening it from the inside. We saw the school yard which was an unprepossessing stony sandy area inappropriate for tiny children to play in, and the fencing surrounding the yard consisted of pieces of corrugated iron and boards leaning at various angles and looking most unsafe, and the metal had sharp edges which could have hurt a child if it had fallen on him. As on other occasions the Amistad group has continued our work in Peru in our absence, and have used the donation provided by Agnes and Derek Grimsdell to buy a new fence for the school which has been completed.
As we were writing this report we received the news and photos from the Amistad group in Callao that a new fence has been built using pre-assembled panels of wood making the play area much safer for the children. The school have offered to send a letter telling us more about it. You can visit our web page to see the photos sent by Grupo Amistad, our partners in Peru .

A new visit to Chiara, Andahuaylas
We were able to visit Chiara for the first time since 2003 (we visited previously in 2001, 2002 and 2003) and it was interesting to see the changes in this peasant community since our last visit. We met some members of the municipality and of the community council and also some youngsters who showed us their “Town Hall” in the main square. They have been provided with a small library and an internet café with 2 computers, something very surprising in such an isolated village in the Andes . For the first time this village has a radio service which is run in the village by a young man who is also in charge of the internet café. The radio reaches nearby villages transmitting local news and music. This is a positive change for the communities, linking them across the area. However the village and communities around still lack basic necessities such as a sewage system and running tap water and the nearest hospital is 4 hours away.
Our main interest was to meet the local women’s group which we did in the evening of our arrival when we received a warm welcome with food and accommodation. After listening to the progress of their activities they showed us the state of the building which our project helped them to construct, providing materials. This time they requested help from us to improved further the building which is located at the entrance to the village. We made a donation consisting of cement and plaster to cover the floor, ceiling and walls to make the interior look more healthy, inviting and user friendly. They cook using logs in the traditional way. They also showed us an old sewing machine which requires mending. They would like to make textiles but cannot afford to. We offered to donate an extra 500 soles after our return to London which we have sent to Peru just recently and we requested once again the help of the Amistad group in Callao who are finding a way to send the money to this very isolated area of Apurimac where wiring money to banks is still not possible. We will inform you of their success in a future bulletin.

Fund raising swim by Liz Kalinauckas at the Tooting Lido
On 9th February Liz Kalinauckas braved temperatures of 6 degrees in the Tooting Bec Lido swimming pool to do a sponsored swim in aid of the PeruApurimac Project. She did a 25 metre head up breast stroke swim wearing a woolly hat as recommended in 4 million litres of freezing cold water. It was a great day with swimmers from various parts of Europe but mainly from Finland where the competition is usually held and where water temperatures are even colder. Liz’s brave effort raised £120 for the project. You can see photos and video in our website.
Latest fund raising event 26th July 2008
On 26th July the Peru Apurimac Project held a fund raising event at the Inca Arch in Brixton. It was a successful occasion and we would like to thank all those who contributed, especially Baile Peru , Ayer y Hoy, Raices del Peru, Scissors dancer Jose Fernandez, Sofia Buchuck, Paloma Palomino, Vicky Cespedes and Alejandra Rodriguez. We would also like to thank Gustavo Pezzia DJ and Jessica Luong who presented the show and other volunteers Andrew, Paola, Talise, Sonia, Rosa, Gregorio and Eddie. Our special thanks to Carlos Diaz the Peruvian artist who donated a painting which was auctioned during the event. We raised £620 after costs.
A recent donation was made by Linda Matthews who sent a box containing nearly new baby clothes for distribution to babies of poor mothers in some hospitals in Lima . Grupo Amistad in Lima will be responsible for ensuring that the clothes are distributed. Our thanks to Linda for the gesture. We will keep you informed when we have photos of the donation.

About us
Peruap is a voluntary organisation that started in Dec 2001, with head quarters in London whose objective is to support small projects in shanty towns and Andean communities in the poor areas of Peru . Its support is principally directed towards the most impoverished sectors of Peruvian society, focusing in particular on children, senior citizens and women. It began its work in some villages of Andahuaylas, in Apurimac, a quechua region in southern Peru , hence the name of our organization, but has also lent help in other regions of Peru . Peruap aims to raise awareness of poverty in Peru in the UK . The funds it receives are through fund raising events carried out in London, as well as from generous donations from friends in the UK .

A un año del terremoto en el sur del Perú
Ha transcurrido un año de ocurrido uno de los peores desastres naturales ocurridos en el Perú y que afectó principalmente a Pisco, Chincha, Ica, Huancavelica y regiones aledañas del sur peruano.
El saldo fue más de 500 personas fallecidas y alrededor de 70 familias afectadas, muchas familias sin techo, problemas de empleo, daños a los cultivos, locales escolares destruidos, etc. ; unas 350 mil personas damnificadas como resultado de aquel sismo de 7.9 de intensidad.
En enero del 2008 Peruap efectuó una visita a esta región afectada y pudo comprobar el efecto devastador del terremoto. Muchas casas destruidas y la población haciendo lo posible para subsistir y recomenzar sus vidas luego del desastre; pero no se evidenciaban muchos signos de la anhelada reconstrucción.
Estuvimos en Chincha alta, Pueblo Nuevo, visitamos el Centro educativo inicial 431, tal como otros muchos centros escolares con serios daños estructurales. Luego visitamos el distrito de El Carmen; la iglesia y gran parte de las viviendas seriamente dañadas. De hecho un gran número de viviendas totalmente destruidas. La reconstrucción aun muy limitada, la escuela estaba en proceso de refacción. Peruap efectuó aquí una pequeña donación en víveres – un mes atrás ya había efectuado una donación similar con la colaboración del grupo voluntario Amistad del Callao - . Luego una vez en Pisco pudimos comprobar el lamentable estado de la ciudad, casas, edificios, la catedral, destruidos. Una recuperación lenta pero, aparte de la remoción de los escombros, no se pudo observar ninguna muestra significativa en la reconstrucción. No pudimos ir a Pisco playa dónde se nos dijo la situación era peor aún.
Enseguida nos trasladamos al distrito de San Andrés, sobre todo muy afectado por la salida del mar. Nos dirigimos a algunos pueblos jóvenes dónde les hicimos llegar una donación en víveres. Aquí nos narraron las dificultades habidas en la distribución de la ayuda. Son sectores en situación de extrema pobreza que se veía ahora agravada por los efectos del terremoto.
Igual panorama de destrucción mostraban otras áreas como el El Chaco y la importante zona turística de Paracas.
Transcurrido un año las noticias sobre la situación en las zonas afectadas nos son muy alentadoras. Aquí en Londres la comunidad peruana se movilizo para expresar su solidaridad, se conformo un comité de ayuda a las víctimas y hubo varias iniciativas. El comité en mención tuvo una intensa actividad organizando eventos para reunir fondos que luego fueron remitidos a dos áreas afectadas como son Huancavelica y a Pueblo Nuevo en Chincha.
No obstante queda aún mucho por hacer en la zona devastada por el sismo. Lamentablemente muy poco se ha avanzado en la reconstrucción. Problemas de celeridad, burocratismo, organización y transparencia son algunos de los obstáculos para mayores avances. Y de acuerdo a las últimas noticias la protesta de los pobladores de Pisco no se ha hecho esperar. Ha habido manifestaciones y muchas interrogantes quedan por resolverse y reclamos como el uso de la ayuda recibida del extranjero, la agilización de la distribución de los bonos de reconstrucción para los pobladores afectados, entre otros temas.

El Carnaval del Pueblo y la participación peruana

Nuevamente el Carnaval del Pueblo se constituyó en uno de los momentos festivos más destacados del año en la comunidad latina del Reino Unido. Junto al Carnaval hay otros eventos latinos que cumplen el rol importante de congregar a las comunidades latinas de este país. Particularmente el Carnaval del Pueblo sigue siendo el mayor carnaval latino en este país al convocar a un público muy diverso, así como a muchos grupos artísticos de los distintos países latinoamericanos, ofreciendo un día de fiesta al aire libre con música, comparsas, danzas, stalls, etc.
Todo carnaval es la manifestación del sentir popular, de los anhelos, aspiraciones, la historia y las tradiciones de las mayorías. Es la continuación de la memoria histórica de nuestros pueblos. Es el modo como los sectores marginales se expresan frente a la cultura oficial y hegemónica. Es el modo cómo responden a su situación. Muchas veces esos sectores no son reconocidos, como el caso de los inmigrantes denominados indocumentados. En la Europa de hoy, frente al creciente clima de incomprensión de los sectores conservadores y xenófobos, hay una profunda necesidad por parte de las minorías de expresarse libremente afirmando su identidad.
No obstante, al centrar nuestro comentario a la participación de las comparsas peruanas en el Carnaval del Pueblo de este año, quisiéramos destacar que lo hicieron entusiastamente por medio de varios grupos de danzas trayendo al carnaval las tres regiones del Perú , la sierra, la costa y la selva, mostrando atuendos típicos de varias regionales. La presencia peruana en el desfile reflejó un trabajo esforzado y colectivo cuyos grupos de danzas estuvieron una de las comparsas acertadamente lideradas por Sonia Reyes, Margarita Paredes, Medalit Soto, Estrella Vivanco, y la otra comparsa por Rosa Ward. Hubo la participación de músicos peruanos, familias peruanas, niños, residentes en el Reino Unido. El paso de las comparsas en general, concitó la admiración de un público numeroso apostado a lo largo de la calle Walworth Road. Participaron también personas de otras nacionalidades luciendo los trajes multicolores como una muestra de su identificación con el folklore andino. En el estrado principal tuvieron una actuación destacada el grupo peruano Kausary, Baila Perú, y otros. Precisamente, la combinación del desfile de comparsas y la actuación en los estrados es uno de los puntos más fuertes de este carnaval.
Algunos han anotado la ausencia de grandes ‘figuras’ en este carnaval, como si la comunidad latina en UK no tuviera nada que ofrecer en términos de cultura y expresión artística. Bienvenidos los grandes nombres, pero aquí también hay muchos talentos. Antes que todo el carnaval es el producto del espíritu de la comunidad para la comunidad.
Ciertamente se echó de menos este año un estrado andino pero hay que destacar que la delegación de Bolivia supo cubrir con creces esta ausencia con un despliegue de su folklore, con grupos de música y danzas típicas . Por otro lado, a pesar del mal tiempo que en algunos momentos le restó algo de brillo al evento como es lógico suponer, podemos decir que el carnaval como tal se cumplió con muchas de sus atracciones . Las comparaciones que se ha querido hacer con festivales internacionales como Glastonbury están fuera de lugar, pues se olvida la diferencia entre un evento que es resultado de una comunidad inmigrante como la latina y otro que es nativo, rockero y con una promoción publicitaria incomparablemente mayor.
Se ha hablado del recorte del apoyo y la promoción por parte de las autoridades e instituciones pertinentes a los eventos que realizan algunas minorías como la latina, y es verdad que eso influye. Esto se habría manifestado en el hecho del acortamiento de la procesión de este carnaval y también en la no realización de algunos eventos latinos como en años anteriores. Ello preocupa, sin duda, pues esos recortes significan un retroceso en la dirección de construir un Londres más diverso e inclusivo. Es de esperar que las nuevas autoridades ediles londinenses no abandonen el legado positivo en la promoción de un Londres sin exclusión y multicultural dejada por la administración municipal londinense anterior.
Año a año la parte andina del carnaval se incrementa y diversifica, lo cual quiere decir se hace indispensable considerar un estrado andino con igual prominencia que el central para el desfile de los grupos andinos. Este estrado ha de ofrecer tanto de música como de danzas del mundo andino que comprende a varios países como Perú, Bolivia y Ecuador, todo ello dentro de una concepción predominantemente cultural en el entendido de que América latina es muy diversa culturalmente y no se circunscribe a unas cuantas expresiones culturales. Hay, por lo tanto, necesidad de promover la enorme riqueza cultural de las etnias indígenas de nuestro continente.
En conclusión, el Carnaval del Pueblo demostró seguir siendo, un referente importante por su carácter multitudinario y la participación de comparsas de las diversas nacionalidades que componen la comunidad. Finalmente, debemos decir se cuente o no con apoyo sea oficial o privado, la promoción del folklore y de la identidad latinoamericana, eventos como el carnaval, en última instancia, dependerán del esfuerzo de los propios latinos, de la propia comunidad; requerirá sobre todo de una actitud amplia y comunitaria. Respecto a las comparsas peruanas, una vez más, nuestras felicitaciones a sus organizadoras, digno de subrayar todas mujeres, lo cual da un claro mentís a la subestimación del rol de la mujer en nuestras sociedades. A seguir adelante.

Rezagos del Carnaval del Pueblo.......
Un Voto de Aplauso!!

Reflexionando, luego de las horas, días y semanas de esfuerzo mancomunado de un grupo de personas, quienes en sus diversos niveles: coordinadoras, instructoras, músicos, bailarines y colaboradores anónimos; aunaron sus ideas y predisposición para representar de manera alturada y noble una parte de la rica cultura peruana: las danzas representativas de las tres regiones del Perú, ante una audiencia exigente como lo es el Carnaval del Pueblo realizado en Burgest Park el pasado 3 de Agosto.
Todos los peruanos participantes(hombres, mujeres y niños) a través de sus respectivas representaciones, ya sea en la comparsa, escenario principal y aun en los puestos de comida, pusieron su parte tan importante al momento de exponer con una sola idea, las costumbres y usos de una comunidad; que por medio de estos eventos de captación social internacional, cierran filas y más aun, sin financiamiento económico alguno, exponen lo mejor de su país!!
Que grande es un pueblo, cuando expresa sus riquezas autóctonas, con libertad y transparencia, sin medir los costos ni esfuerzos físicos e intelectuales que ello conlleva!!
Por todo ello, de pie ante tan excelente demostración de patriotismo, hermandad y entrega para con su comunidad, pido señores y señoras, un fuerte y sincero voto de aplauso para todos y cada uno de ellos, sin distinción alguna y en clara expresión de reconocimiento, decirles:

Peruap desea agradecer a todos quienes brindaron su colaboración que hizo posible la realización este evento de celebración de la Independencia del Perú. Evento que sirvió también para reunir fondos para apoyar proyectos en el Perú en barrios y comunidades del Perú en situación de pobreza.
Muchos compatriotas y numeroso público se dieron cita el día 26 colmando las instalaciones del Inca Arch en la localidad de Brixton. Nuestras gracias a Eddie y Rosa que nos cedieron gentilmente las instalaciones del Inca Arch. Nuestro agradecimiento igualmente a los grupos artísticos que participaron dándole realce a la ocasión. Estos son el grupo de danzas Baila Perú, grupo criollo Ayer y hoy, grupo de danzas Raíces del Perú, Danzante de Tijeras José Fernández, niña Alejandra Rodríguez, Sofía Buchuck, Paloma Palomino, Vicky Céspedes.
También las gracias a Chilli and Ginger por la difusión, al periódico Noticias, el Consulado del Perú, DJ Gustavo Pezzia, a la presentadora Jessica Luong, Imagen latina, Minka, voluntarios Andrew, Paola, Jude, Talise, Sonia, Gregorio, Rosa , Eddie. Especial mención del pintor peruano Carlos Quien donó una de sus pinturas para ser subastada. También agradecemos a las personas que ayudaron con la preparación de la comida y otras personas que colaboraron de una u otra forma. Welcome to this latest edition of the Peru Apurimac Project Bulletin. At this time of year it is customary to think of family and friends, and our thoughts go to the victims of the Peruvian Earthquake as well as to the victims of disasters both natural and man made throughout the world.
A message of peace and wellbeing for Christmas and for the New Year.

New Fundraising Event 8 December 2007
The Peru Apurimac Project is putting on a fund raising event at Carpenter Hall which is situated at 4a Inverness Place, Bayswater W2 3JF. The doors will open at 7pm and the event will finish at 11pm. Tickets will cost £7 and proceeds will go to help the earthquake affected area of southern Peru and to a community project in the shanty town Pachacutec, located in Ventanilla, Callao. This December the Peru Apurimac Project is celebrating its 7th year of fundraising to help community projects in Peru and would like to take this opportunity to thank the people living in the UK for their continued support.

Ceremony of the National Flag and “chocolatada” in Pedro Ruiz Gallo del Callao.
On 7th June, to celebrate the National Flag Day the Peru Apurimac Project funded a “chocolatada” for the children of a local infants and primary school. The children paraded to the square with the flag which was hoisted, the National Anthem was sung and a child dressed in a costume of the Peruvian Army of the 19th century entertained us with his dramatic recitation of a poem. Following the ceremony the children enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate and piece of chancay (a type of sweet bread). This event was jointly organised by Amistad groupd, the local neighbourhood association and Pedro Ruiz Gallo primary school.
Donation of toys to young victims of Peruvian Earthquake in Ica
The Project sent a sum of money to the Amistad group in Callao who bought toys which they took to the earthquake affected area of Ica. The Amistad group visited the school “CE Inicial Estatal No 73, and gave to children there. The money sent was raised in the concert given by Rosa Limaco and the money collected at the party organized by the Latinos of Richmond.
Visit to a local Parish in Pachacutec shanty town in Ventanilla, Callao
We paid a visit to one of the parishes of Pachacutec to meet with the choir who would like some help to purchase musical instruments. At present they sing and play using the few instruments they have for both church and social events and gave us a demonstration of their talents. Their enthusiasm was very infectious and we hope to be able to help them in the future.

Visit to Huancayo “Polivalente” School for disabled children
In January we visited the Polivalente school for children with a variety of disabilities, such as blindness, deafness, physical disabilities and learning difficulties. They also teach blind adults to live and get around independently. The headmaster and a teacher showed us round the school and told us of their need for a computer modern enough to use with the specialised programmes for the children they look after.
In June we were able to buy a computer with the specifications needed and presented it to the school at a small ceremony attended by the children with their teachers and a few parents. We were able to set up the computer and took a photograph of one of the children trying it out. The school is situated in Huancayo, a city in the central Andes of Peru.

Fund raising Concert given by Rosa Limaco
In September Rosa and Chano Limaco put on a concert to raise funds for the Peru Apurimac Project. Rosa sang traditional songs from Ayacucho with the accompaniment of Chano on the guitar. The concert was a great success with people dancing and enjoying the popular music from this area of Peru. Our thanks to ASOBOLCUYDE (Asociación boliviana de cultura y deportes), Raíces de Tarija, and Sin Fronteras group (Andean panpipes) for taking part in the show.

Participation of the group “Latinos de Richmond”
At an event organised by the group “Latinos de Richmond” we were very kindly allowed to make a collection on behalf of the Peru Apurimac Project. We are very grateful for their collaboration.

Collaboration with the Support Group “Amistad”
On 16th January 2007 the support Group Amistad was formed after a meeting of the Peruap Executive Committee, with the aim of opening channels of communication and coordination from London with the groups we support in Peru. In the meeting to outline the group’s Constitution, in which we attended as honorary members, the First Directive Committee was formed, with Mrs. Silvia Samanamud being elected President. Her supporters declared her identification with, and her desire to collaborate with the objectives of the Project.

About us
Peruap is a voluntary organisation that started in Dec 2001, with head quarters in London whose objective is to support small projects of a community nature in Peru. Its support is principally directed towards the most impoverished sectors of Peruvian society, focusing in particular on children, senior citizens and women. It began its work in some villages of Andahuaylas, in Apurimac, a quechua region in souththern Peru, hence the name of our organization, but has also lent help in other regions of Peru. Peruap aims to raise awareness of poverty in Peru in the UK and also to establish links of cultural and social nature between our communities. The funds it receives are through fund raising events carried out in London, as well as from generous donations from friends in the UK.

ciudad de Londres. Somos un grupo voluntario que tiene por finalidad apoyar a grupos sociales y proyectos comunitarios en las zonas marginales del Perú tanto en la capital como en provincias, con un énfasis en la ayuda a hogares infantiles, grupos de mujeres, centros de salud y grupos barriales.
Desde sus inicios ha venido realizando una serie de eventos culturales
y sociales con la participación y colaboración de la comunidad peruana en la ciudad de Londres. Es digno de mencionar la participación de la comunidad latinoamericana y los amigos del Perú en el Reino Unido.

Cada evento ha tenido la participación solidaria y voluntaria de artistas de distintas nacionalidades, grupos de danzas y diversas instituciones sin cuyo concurso no hubiera sido posible dar continuidad al proyecto y sobre todo reunir los fondos necesarios para apoyar a los proyectos en el Perú. NEWS AND FORTHCOMING EVENTS

Welcome to a new edition of our bulletin. First of all our thanks to Maria Anne Moore for lthe organization of the party which is to take place on the 12th August to help the PERUAP (Peru Apurimac Project). Also we give thanks to the ex members of Andean group AMARU III for the collaboration who are to get together again on the 6th September for a special concert to support our project. We would also like to say thank you to all the people who are giving us help in various ways in the fund-raising events we organise and to the people who have supported the Projetc both by giving us generous donations and by attending our events.

Event supporting PERUAP
On the12th August a farewell party will be held in support of PERUAP organized by Maria Anne Moore who will shortly be going to Peru to help various organizations who help socially disadvantaged people and also to collaborate with PERUAP. The money raised from this party are going to a project which is helping elderly people in the poor area of Santa Rosa in Callao. There will be music, food, and the traditional Andean Scissors Dance. Letters from Peru: Elderly people association in Santa Rosa Callao
The “Santa Rosa de Lima” Elderly People Club situated in the shanty town Santa Rosa in Callao has asked us for to provide building material to complete the flooring of their local centre. In Peru 8% of the population are aged 60 years or over. “ A large proportion of these people live in state of abandonment with little or no recourse to pension or social and nor proper access to health services”. Our Project has decided to help this club to which we plan to pay a visit during our next visit to Peru to see more closely and to learn more about the problems these elderly people are facing.

Pachacutec shanty town and the irrigation project
We have received another letter asking for a help from the group of teachers of the Hiroshima School in Pachacutec , Ventanilla Callao, for the installation of another water tank in order to complete the irrigation system project which is part of their eduactional and enviromental studies project. In our last visit in November we were shown the irrigation system with the tank and piping we had donated in place and already irrigating the area designated . We are considering the possibility of continuing helping them .

Forthcoming event : Concert by Amaru IIII
Moisés Conde, Dante Concha, Chano Díaz Límaco and Wilfredo Avalos, will get together for the first time in more than a decade to give a very special concert on the 6th September at St Johns Church Waterloo at 7.30 pm. Peruap is very grateful for this show of friendship and wilingness to support our project. Amaru III was one of the most popular and original Andean bands in the United Kingdom . Once again their fans and people new to their music will have the opportunity of enjoying their successes and their music.

An appeal for the next event
If anyone would like to offer their services to help with the organization of the above concert we would be very grateful . We need volunteers to help with selling entrance tickets , serving drinks and other tasks. Please contact us on the address below.

About us
PERUAP is a non profit making organization helping the poor in Peru. It was formed in 2001 in London following the visit to the province of Andahuaylas in Apurimac . Its main aim is to raise awareness in the UK abut poverty in Peru and to raise money to help smalll projects in poor areas in Peru. So far we have organized a range of social and cultural events in London, raising funds which have allowed us to help schools, health services, women’s groups, children homes among other projetcs.
